The Ark at JFK: $48m Animal Terminal of Dreams

It is amazing to discover what can be transported by air but animals are by far the most precious and interesting cargoes. Imagine our excitement then at the news of a new $48 million animal terminal ‘The ARK’ built at JFK Airport, New York.

JFK currently sees around 70,000 animals pass through the Vetport in only 10,000 square foot of space and animals unable to be housed there are transported two hours north of the airport to a special quarantine centre.

But Racebrook Capital have announced a game changer, unveiling their 178,000 square foot vision of animal heaven, with quarantines and shelter facilities for the world’s most weird and wonderful creatures.

Director of the project Dr Aaron S. Perl stated in a recent press release that “with demand for pets and animals of all kinds transported by air escalating year on year, we recognised the need for a more humane and efficient model for this significant segment of the air travel industry”

 

The new development will serve as a hub for animals every needs. Some of the facilities to be included:

  • Large animal departure lounge including flat screen TVs
  • Paradise 4 Paws – 24 hour ‘resort’ with bone shaped dog pool, sleeping suites and spa services for grooming and massage therapies.
  • Individual units for horses with climate controls, food, water and bedding.
  • Vet Hospital – providing around the clock emergency care.

6 Crazy Air Cargo Facts

To celebrate our recent IATA Accreditation we’ve delved a little further into some eye opening air cargo facts from the wonderful world above us.

 

1. The First Ever Air Cargo Flight was in 1910

The first ‘cargo only’ flight was recorded in November 1910 in the USA, using a Wright Model B aeroplane that flew 65 miles carrying a package of silk. The business owner used the pioneering transport more as a PR stunt to celebrate the opening of his store, with the bundle of silk cut into individual pieces and glued onto souvenir postcards.

2. Biggest Air Cargo Planes in the World

The biggest and most notorious air cargo plane is known as the Antonov An-225 Mriya or in other words… the beast. Originating from the Cold War days and used by Russia specifically for its Space Program. The plane stands at 275ft long and a 290ft wingspan dwarfs even the biggest passenger planes.

3. … And Weirdest

It has to be the Airbus Beluga pictured below that takes its design inspiration from the Beluga whales. The unusual shape giving that distinct hump results in a wonderfully spacious cargo hold of 14000 cubic metres or 36 cars.

4. 2 Million Tonnes of Freight Transported By Air every Year

Aviation transported 51.2 million tonnes of freight in 2015. To put that into some sort of perspective that is the equivalent to 80,000 Antonov An-225 planes (the biggest and heaviest aircraft in the world.)* Antonov Plane maximum take-off weight.is 640 tons.

5. Is it a Bird? In a plane?

Animals have been transported by air since 1920s, with Domestic Pet Transportation, Aquarium animals and Zoo animals all able to be transported by specialist air cargo companies.

Killer Whales, Giraffes, Elephants, Seals and even Lions have all been transported by air like modern day versions of Noah’s Ark. Recently Swaziland sent 18 Elephants via Boeing 747 to an American zoo to preserve the Rhino population.

Did you know that the majority of cut flowers imported to the UK are flown from Kenya? Air Freight or Sea Freight – Which is best for my business?

Deciding on the best mode of transport for your import / export goods can often be a tricky, compromised decision. When it comes to air freight and sea freight, cost, speed and reliability all need to be considered in order to maximise profitability for your business.

We’ll take you through just some of the pros and cons of sea freight and air freight for you to decide which is best suited to your business.


 

 

Speed

In fast paced commodity markets the speed of transport can be crucial to success. With time sensitive inter-continental consignments, air freight is often the fastest and most direct mode of transport. When importing products from China air freight can take less than 3 days to arrive in the UK but for a containership to transport the same cargo it can be up to 35 days depending on the specific routings.

Although the technological developments seen in shipping continues to improve transit times, the speed of air transport will always make this option more desirable for businesses with short delivery deadlines in fast moving consumer markets.

 

 

Cost

Sea freight is usually charged per container (20ft or 40ft) whereas air freight charges are calculated on ‘chargeable’ weight basis. Due to the limited space on the aircraft, the size of the goods have to be taken into consideration as well as cargo weight.

Generally to transport heavier, bulkier goods air freight is more expensive than sea freight. Over the past few years’ sea freight rates have dropped to record lows, widening the cost gap even further between the two modes of transport. But with smaller goods the price difference narrows and air freight becomes more attractive.

Reliability

Often the reliability of transport can outweigh other factors such as cost and speed. When operations are reliant on the delivery of goods it becomes paramount that goods arrive on time and in good condition.

Air Freight is considered a less intrusive mode of transport with lower risk of damaging cargo when compared to sea freight transportation. Planes notoriously adhere to their schedules. Every minute spent on the tarmac, outside of scheduled take-off and landing, can accumulate an inordinate amount of extra costs. And with many airlines making 3-4 calls a day on certain routings if your cargo misses one flight chances are it can take the next just a few hours later. Shipping lines however suffer no extra cost penalties for late callings and so it is common for them to be way off planned schedules with 1-2 days delay.

 

 

Transparency

The transparency with air freight is one of the main reasons why many companies prefer this mode of transport. Airlines and forwarding companies offer complete track and trace facilities that monitors the cargo from departure to arrival, whereas tracking containers specific location on the ocean is almost impossible until the vessel nears port. There are vessel tracking websites and devices that can track the vessel carrying your container, but you will need to obtain this information from your carrier directly.

What does it come down to?

One of the main considerations for any logistics manager is ultimately the bottom line and the difference in price between sea freight and air freight transport could be the determining factor in selecting the best shipping method for your business.
