Steam Generator & 3 Compressors
Steam generator and three compressors shipped out of gauge from Felixstowe, UK to Durban, South Africa.
The steam generator was the largest and heaviest piece; weighing 14 tons with dimensions of 6 x 2.4 x 2.8 meters. The slightly smaller compressors weighed 7 tons each and had dimensions of 4.3 x 2.4 x 2.4 meters.
Due to the size and weight of the pieces, Tuscor Lloyds chose to transport the project cargo as an out of gauge shipment, using two 40ft flat rack containers to secure the cargo. The first flat rack was loaded with one of the three compressors and the steam generator whilst the second flat rack held the two remaining compressors. The cargo had to be completely secured to the flat rack container for the long ocean transportation to Durban.
Once secured by Tuscor Lloyds’ packing experts using heavy duty ratchet straps and wooden chocks, the flat rack containers were lifted onto trucks and transported by road to the port of Felixstowe. The following day the flat rack containers were lifted on to the vessel which would transport the cargo to the port of Durban, South Africa.
The transit time for this project shipment between Felixstowe and Durban was 38 days, which would provide sufficient time for the cargo to be unloaded and transported to the site where it was required, as well as allowing some flexibility for possible delays. Thanks to staff throughout the supply chain there was no delays and the cargo arrived on site ahead of schedule and within the clients’ tight budget.
